This premiere episode of “Greta Wire” takes a fresh look at championship boxer and actor Mike Tyson through two very different lenses: the private man and the public scandal that reshaped his life.
Greta Van Susteren begins by explaining that after years of knowing Tyson, what has always stayed with her is how unlike his fearsome public image he really is in person—gentle, reflective, and deeply human. That sets up a long, informal conversation with Tyson that feels more personal than performative.
In Tyson’s segment, the discussion moves through his current life, including his amateur boxing invitational, his training habits, his love of boxing history, his devotion to pigeons, his diet, his family, and an upcoming exhibition in Africa. The tone is warm and conversational, showing Tyson as disciplined, nostalgic, and surprisingly soft-spoken, while also revealing how central boxing still is to his identity.
The episode then pivots to the question that has shadowed Tyson for decades: his 1992 rape conviction. Van Susteren brings in Harvard law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, Tyson’s appellate lawyer, to address it directly. Dershowitz does not hedge. He argues that Tyson was innocent, that the conviction was a grave miscarriage of justice, and that the trial was damaged by poor lawyering, excluded evidence, and what he describes as corruption in the Indiana courts.
Dershowitz walks through the facts as he sees them, insisting that key eyewitness testimony should have changed the outcome and that the legal system failed Tyson at every stage. His account is blunt, emotional, and legally specific, turning the second half of the episode into a forceful challenge to the conventional understanding of Tyson’s case.
Overall, the episode is both a character portrait and a legal reexamination. It presents Tyson not simply as a former heavyweight champion with a notorious past, but as a man Van Susteren believes has long been misunderstood — and as someone Dershowitz says was wrongfully convicted in one of the most consequential chapters of his life.
