From The Ashes: Restoring The Viral 1977 VW Bus That Survived The LA Fires | Cars & Bikes | Forbes

When the LA wildfires tore through Southern California, artist and surfer Megan Weinraub had no choice but to detach from her 1977 Volkswagen bus, Azul. Fleeing with only her dog and her passport, she watched news footage of her neighborhood being leveled and assumed the vintage van was a total loss.

The image is haunting. A bright blue 1977 VW Bus sits parked amid a fire-scorched Pacific Palisades neighborhood. It’s almost unbelievable that this VW Bus looks untouched while trees were reduced to black skeletons, homes to rubble. But as people started to return to the neighborhood and survey the damage, Azul became a beacon of hope. Friends sent Weinraub photos of the Bus, which captured the attention of AP photographer Mark Terrill who captured an image that quickly went viral. Weinraub was stunned.

So was Rachael Zaluzec, senior vice president of experience and brand marketing at VW. After the AP photo went viral “my phone blew up, people saying how compelling that image was,” she said. It was at once tragic and hopeful; the indelible image of this VW Bus spoke to the spirit of the community.
Recognizing the image as a powerful symbol of resilience during a time of tragedy, Volkswagen’s marketing team reached out to Weinraub to offer an unexpected lifeline.

While Azul appeared intact from a distance, the intense heat had heavily damaged one side, melting components and causing severe paint damage. The specialized team at Volkswagen’s Oxnard facility dedicated months to a painstaking restoration, aiming to transform the scarred vehicle back into the “classic California dream.” Today, Azul is back on the PCH, glowing and restored to a condition better than when Weinraub first found her, serving as a tangible reminder that good can emerge from even the most devastating circumstances.
